Aaah – Georgia. We love it for so many reasons. The history, the culture, the beaches and the beautiful mountains are what make it one of the best destinations in the southeast. One of the main attractions in the great state of Georgia is located in beautiful Augusta – the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area. From historic sites to beautiful outdoor activities, there’s no doubt you’ll have a memorable time here. It’s so great you’ll want to keep coming back for more! Take a look at just a few of the things the Augusta Canal has to offer.

The History

The Augusta Canal

The Augusta Canal is a National Heritage Area that was established by the U.S. Congress in 1845. The National Heritage Area is an ideal destination for those who are interested in the rich history of Georgia and our nation. The Augusta Canal walks visitors through the Industrial Revolution that took place in the American South. The canal provided textile and many other manufacturing sources to the southeast around the time of the Civil War. To this day, the Canal is the oldest hydropower canal still running and operating in America.

Be sure to stop by the Canal Discovery Center before making your way to the Canal. The Augusta Canal Discovery Center is located at Enterprise Mill. In addition, it’s a resource to guests to learn about those who built the canal and made it what it is today. Also available to guests are guided canal boat tours that depart daily.
